Human rights is one of the most important rights in the constitution worldwide. In as much as everybody is entitled to his or her freedom, most individuals, more so the marginalized groups such as refugees, still do not get to enjoy these rights. However, thanks to the efforts made by organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), things are shaping up for the better.
ACLU is a human right civil movement that dates back to the first world war in 1919/1920. During this war, thousands of people were unconstitutionally searched in their properties. Those found without warranties were detained and brutally treated without any regard for the law. This situation caused an uproar with a small group of brave individuals standing up to speak against these injustices hence the birth of ACLU.
Since its inception, the American Civil Liberties Union has grown from a small group and now enjoys a tremendous support of members. Currently, this civil human rights group has a population off at least one million members and more than three hundred staff. Out of this number, there are volunteering attorneys, human rights activists, and donors who help fund the activities of the group.
ACLU is founded on human rights movement and for a long time has been involved in championing the causes of the Americans and in particular, the marginalized groups. Even when the cause seems unpopular, ACLU has been able to stand tall and voice out the ills of the society. Read more: Jim Larkin | Twitter
Thanks to the many human rights attorneys within the movement, American immigrants are assured of enjoying the due process when it comes to having their cases heard and tried. ACLU has become so significant in the American economy that it is hard to imagine an America without it.
Just like any civil organization, ACLU relies on donations from wealthy individuals and organizations to conduct its operations. One organization that has helped ACLU make an impact in the society is the Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund.
About Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund
Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund is an organization that was established by Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin after receiving compensation due to their wrongful arrest by Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County.
Lacey and Larkin are media personalities who were vocal in defending the rights of the marginalized Arizona citizens being harassed by the state officials. Unlike other media personalities, these two individuals were concerned with creating a safe and free environment for the immigrants hence without fear of intimidation, they published the injustices by the Sherriff on the front page of their publication. This led to their unlawful arrest.
After receiving the significant compensation amount from the state, Lacey and Larkin dedicated the amount to civil human rights movement. Currently, this fund helps fund groups that advocate for the human rights and freedom of speech. The fund is also used to help the Arizona immigrants get through life by providing them with basic supplies such as food, good clothing, and safe shelter.
