Sujit Choudhry: Global Constitutionalism Expert

Even in constitutional law, perfection can’t get in the way of doing good. Sujit Choudhry, the director of the Center for Constitutional Transitions, learned this in his more than twenty years experience as a constitutional advisor. As an an advisor, he helped in the process of creating and changing constitutions after large political events.

Choudhry’s organization brings together experts from across the globe to share knowledge and engage in collaborative research products to find solutions for gaps in knowledge in constitutionalism. The team of experts at the Center for Constitutional Transitions recently finished three large projects with the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance in the Fall of 2017. In addition to his work at the Center for Constitutional Transitions, he hopes one day there will be an organization that translates a collection of important constitutional case-law. This collection would change constitutionalism forever by allowing the aggregation of this information in one accessible place.

Sujit Choudhry earned his master’s degree in Law from Harvard Law School in 1998. Additionally, he holds bachelor’s degrees in law from the University of Toronto in 1996 and the University of Oxford in 1994 ( ┬áHe has three law degrees from three different countries, all from prestigious educational institutes. He founded the Center for Constitutional Transitions in 2012 and as of today is still the Director. Currently, he is also an I. Michael Heyman Professor of Law at the University of California at Berkeley and has been since 2014. In 2011, he worked for the New York University School of Law as a Cecelia Goetz Professor of Law. Additionally, from 1999 to 2011 he was employed in various positions at the University of Toronto. He became a School Chair of the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in 2006. He began his post-university career in the coveted position of Law Clerk for Rt. Hon. Antonia Lamer at the Supreme Court of Canada. Rt. Hon.
