Professor Sujit Choudhry – Constitutional Expert and Advisor

Mr. Sujit Choudhry is a constitutional expert and advisor, as well as a teacher, writer and editor, and speaker. Th Center for Constitutional Transitions is a network of a board, think tanks, and experts that research, compile, and analyze data about constitutional transitions. In total there are 50 legal experts from more than 20 countries around the globe who work together to provide the discipline of comparative constitutional law with all of the information and solution it needs.

The idea to create the network came to Professor Sujit Choudhry during his years of research as a student. H studied in three countries, and every time there was the same predicament. Professor Sujit Choudhry has served as an advisor in the constitutional creation or transitioning of a dozen countries including Nepal, Libya, South Africa, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Jordan, and more. Professor Sujit Choudhry was invited to discuss the constitutional issues of the nation at a conference in its capital Kiev earlier this year. He worked with a dozen other experts from around the world to put their heads together and come up with solutions. A few months ago, Professor Sujit Choudhry offered his advisory services in an open letter to Catalonia and Spain along with several other legal experts, also calling for a peaceful negotiation between the two sides.  Additional article on chronicleweek.com.

Sujit Choundry, the Director of Center for Constitutional Transition

Sujit Choundry was in a roundtable discussion in Ukraine with several other scholars and constitutional experts to discuss the semi-presidential system that the country uses. They also discussed the constitutional challenge that is facing Ukraine. Choudhry said that it was clear that democracy in that nation was faced with many challenges like legislature electoral system, limit of presidential powers and week political parties.

Some of the people who were in the discussion are Thomas Sidelius of Dalarna University, Vladimir Vasilenko of Ukraine’s Human Rights, and Sergyi Holovatyi who is a member of Ukraine’s constitutional commission. Sujit Choudhry was discussing with people who have a proper knowledge of the constitutional process. Sujit has also lectured many countries and served in constitutional processes of several others.

Choudhry said that the constitution-making is an exciting topic that many experts enjoy discussing. He advised constitutional thought leaders to gather policy based options that support constitutional reforms. Sujit Choudhry said that most experts focus on a case study which they use to assemble materials for the subject.

Sujit is the director of Center for Constitutional Transition a body that he says is responsible for gathering and mobilizing ideas supporting constitutional building and reform. The CCT works with international experts who are accountable for producing policies that are evidence-based. Sujit Choudhry has made himself a name in the constitutional field. He abandoned biology for law and proved that he took the right path by attaining master in law from the Harvard School of Law.
