Sujit Choudhry: Helping to Legalize the Law
Ukraine is going through a rough patch these days, what with the political turmoil caused by recent events. The country is run by a semi-presidential system, which basically means there is not much of a constitution to run things. The situation in Ukraine makes even a country such as the US look much better off politically despite recent events. This past July 10th a work shop was held in Kiev, Ukraine that was attended by many prominent constitutional lawyers such as Sujit Choudhry and Victor Musiaka. Sujit Choudhry is based in the US and has studied constitutional law through out his entire career. Check ceocfointerviews.com to read a relevant article of an interview with Sujit.
So why did a workshop of this nature happen in Ukraine? The answer is simple. Ukraine belonged to the Soviet system and had a communist form of government for many years. This all ended around 20 years ago but the country has struggled to maintain a democratic system of government. Therefore, Ukraine has been facing one crisis after another since the fall of Communism. This made Ukraine fertile grounds for constitutional lawyers such as Sujit Choudhry to show up and try to fix Ukraine’s democracy issues. On a day to day governmental level the main issue facing Ukraine is that there are a lot of small political parties, a president and prime minister running things and rampant corruption. This system has all but crippled the country and there is more work to be done. Mr. Choudhry runs an organization called The Center for Constitutional Transition. Through this organization, he hopes to return to Ukraine and help out more in the future.
